The internet is buzzing after Marvel released the new trailer for Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Thursday night!
The trailer is full of impressive action sequences that we can’t wait to see on the movie theater screen. It shows the main character, Shang-Chi, discovering his identity while coming to terms with the unwanted parts of his past.
Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film to have an Asian protagonist. It is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name who first appeared in 1973.
Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is one of the many films to be released as part of the MCU’s Phase Four. In 2019, Marvel had announced a February 2021 release date for the film, but that was pushed back due to COVID-19.
What we can expect from the film
Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu in the lead role, Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, and Fala Chen. The film was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who is known for directing Short Term 12 (2013), Just Mercy (2019), and The Glass Castle (2017).
According to Marvel, “Shang-Chi must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.”
In an April 19 Instagram post, Simu Liu wrote “Shang Chi is more than just a movie – it is a celebration of [Asian] culture and a rallying cry for the forgotten, the unseen, and the overlooked.” He said “it’s also going to deliver superhero action like you have NEVER. SEEN. BEFORE.”

This Twitter user said that they’re excited that it looks like Marvel is bringing back an old villain.
Ok, I’m excited for Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Aside from the action scenes, I like that they’re using Abomination again. Haven’t seen him since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.

I thought I understood what Black Panther meant for and did for a minority’s representation, but I just realized I didn’t really truly ‘get it’ until I saw Shang Chi’s trailers.
