Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 has skyrocketed to the top of the box office in its opening weekend (05-07May17).

The superhero film, starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Vin Diesel, has earned $145 million to take the number one spot. The sequel has taken in 54 per cent more than the original film in 2014, which grossed $94.3 million. The new movie’s North American haul has also helped its global earnings, which now sit at $427.6 million.

Last month (Apr17), director James Gunn announced plans to close the highly successful franchise with a third film, which he will write and helm.

“In the end, my love for (characters) Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Star-Lord, Yondu, Mantis, Drax, and Nebula – and some of the other forthcoming heroes – goes deeper than you guys can possibly imagine, and I feel they have more adventures to go on and things to learn about themselves and the wonderful and sometimes terrifying universe we all inhabit,” he wrote in a Facebook message. “And, like in both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, we will work on creating the story that goes beyond what you expect…”

“(The third movie) will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel (Comics Universe) characters into the next ten years and beyond.”

How to be a Latin Lover and Beauty and the Beast round out the top five, respectively.
