In a city like Houston, there are so many local cinemas near you to choose from that it can be hard to know where to start. Houston Movie Theaters: AMC Willowbrook 24

This theater is one of the many AMCs in the Houston and Texas area. Like any AMC, this cinema strives to make sure you’re having an amazing experience with crystal clear projections and surround sound. You’ll find all of the new releases here with luxury plush recliner seats.

You can choose to order snacks ahead of time with by ordering online and picking it up at the snack counter once you arrive. No worries if you’d rather wait till you get there. The movie theater offers so many options to choose from like candies, popcorn, but also hot foods like pizza. If you’re over the age of 21, check out the MacGuffins Bar for alcoholic drinks like cocktails, beer and wine.

At 14 Pews, you’ll discover exploratory films that promote discourse and and create dialogues around issues within culture and society. This non-profit theater screens independent films, documentaries, experimental short films, and so much more.

The cinema prides itself on the creation of art, curating and hosting 8 different film festivals. Along with movies they screen, they have works of their own, which you can find on their site. A lot of these pieces are documentaries on various artists living in the Austin area. Since 2011, 14 Pews has established the Artist-in-Residency program where people can have the space to create works or host their own art shows.

Spend a night under the stars at the Rooftop Cinema Club in Houston. This chain movie theater prides itself on movie screenings with spectacular views of the city. You’ll find screenings of classics, cult films, and some new releases.

The movie theater creatively picks out their movies based on different Zodiac seasons and other special category genres. For example, during Leo season, audiences could see movies by or starring Leos like Bridesmaids. In August, the cinema celebrates romance, showing films like La La Land.

Houston Movie Theaters: Moonstruck Drive-In

Gear up for the movie adventure of a life-time with Houston’s Moonstruck Drive-In! Located near the water front of the East River development, this drive-in offers movies with the beautiful view of the Houston skyline. Just think about those colorful sunsets!

The drive-in opened right at the height of pandemic, so movie-goers could still enjoy the cinema experience with the health and safety of an outside area. The space is still showing movies, with focuses on new releases like Bullet TrainBeast, and Where the Crawdads Sing.

If you’re craving snacks, Moonstruck offers the classics like candy, popcorn, and soda. On Saturdays, they offer food trucks that rotate each weekend. Tickets cost $30/car, with up to 6 people per vehicle.

For many, this drive-in brings in feelings of nostalgia. “This reminded me so much of my childhood,” one google review says. “The movie screen was clear. Houston Movie Theaters: IPIC  

This upscale theater chain with a luxury feel planted its roots in Houston in 2010. While the cinema screens new releases and classic cult films, it also provides expertise dining experience. You can choose from a vast menu of foods from shrimp avocado salad, nachos, pizza, buttermilk fried chicken, tres leches with berries and cream. We can’t forget popcorn!

If you’d rather eat without the addition of a movie screen, check out the Tusk room, a cocktail bar lounge that offers specialty alcoholic drinks and tasty foods.

“My wife and I recently moved to Houston and have been to a few movie theaters we have not been impressed with,” one Google reviewer says. “Either they are too hot, cramped, or the seats are super uncomfortable. Houston Movie Theaters: The Museum of Fine Arts

We have Houstonia Magazine to thank for highlighting this gem. While this may be the last place you think of when you want to go to the movies, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is a rare find.

Here, you’ll find screenings of the classics, foreign films, and many other movies that are far from the mainstream. Currently, their showtimes include Monty Python and the Holy GrailM.C. Escher: Journey to InfinityPeter Von KantLoving HighsmithStrangers on a TrainLight from the East, and the Manhattan Short Film Festival.
