Whether you want to admit it or not, you’ve probably sat in front of a film screen and felt all of the feels while watching a romantic comedy. From classics like When Harry Met Sally… to more modern tales of love like Knocked Up, Hollywood certainly know how to make us laugh, cry and turn into mush.

The lovely people over at the Sapio dating app decided to a better understanding as to why we love romantic comedies so much. They looked at the  top 150 grossing films from IMDB’s list of romantic comedies and paired the list with a survey of 1,000 Americans who answered questions about love and films. Their findings just might surprise you.

First and foremost it looks like Hollywood is a tad behind the times when it comes to how couples are meeting in the 21st century. There was a time when people were ashamed about online dating. However, that is now a thing of the past. And yet, only one film on IMDB’s list, You’ve Got Mail, which stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan depicts a couple who meet online. In contrast, over one-third of the people surveyed said that they have gone out with someone they met online.

Sapio also discovered some more interesting facts about American dating life including the fact that 72% of people have escaped the “friend zone.” Also, while unrequited love is something that 78% of respondents  have experienced, only 6% of RomComs feature this dynamic.

Stillm one of the most hilarious facts about Sapio’s study is that even though moviegoers love to see love-at-first-sight depicted in films, 85% of people feel like it’s super unrealistic.
