Simu Liu made his debut as Shang-Chi donning a silk kimono tux and a Ben Baller Buddha necklace. In a post he shared on Instagram, Simu Liu wrote:

Our two-year journey has culminated in a moment of triumph and celebration. What a privilege it has been to work on this movie- directed by the incredible [Destin Daniel Cretton], featuring the talented work of over 3000 people-and to be surrounded every day by such positivity and joy.”

Greg Alba of The Reel Rejects on YouTube praised the film’s cast, but said that 1 actor, in particular, stood out for him: My favorite out of the whole cast has to have been Tony Leung as The Mandarin in the movie. He brought such pathos to the role and every time he was on screen I thought he stole the show.

What is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings about?

All of this hype surrounding Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings might have you wondering what the film is about. According to Marvel, “Shang-Chi must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.”

In an April 19 Instagram post, Simu Liu wrote: “Shang Chi is more than just a movie – it is a celebration of [Asian] culture and a rallying cry for the forgotten, the unseen, and the overlooked.” He said “it’s also going to deliver superhero action like you have NEVER. SEEN. BEFORE.”

What are the Ten Rings you might ask? In the trailer, the Ten Rings appear to give powers to whoever uses them. The Ten Rings were a product of a dragon-like race and were initially used as a power source. The Mandarin (Shang-Chi’s father, played by Tony Leung) has discovered how to make the rings respond to his commands, which is how we see them in the trailer.

In contrast to his father, Shang-Chi’s powers lie in hand-to-hand combat and he is known in Marvel Comics as the “Master of Kung Fu.” It can be expected that this is what brings some of the intense action sequences that reviewers have been applauding.

We can hardly wait to see Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in theaters on September 3. Be sure to check back then to see our review of the film!
