Read on as we outline everything we know this production and Chastain’s performance.

Jessica Chastain’s Return to Broadway

Jessica Chastain, made her Broadway debut in the 2012 revival of The Heiress. Her character in Heiress parallels her work in A Dolls House as she plays a naïve young woman who becomes empowered.

The Heiress  is set in the world of 1850s New York City high society. Chastain played the socially awkward and plain Catherine Sloper. She cowers under her domineering father who blames her for causing her mother’s death in childbirth. When Catherine falls Morris Townsend, her father insists the poor yet handsome suitor only wants the money she will inherit.

The Story of A Doll’s House

Written in 1879 by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, the play follows the lives of Torvald and Nora Helmer. She’s a young woman who is married to a man that treats her as less than. He treats her more like a child or pet than as his equal. The story sees Nora transform from wallflower to a strong and empowered woman with a life changing choice to a bold, potentially damning decision. Initially, she forged her father’s signature to save her husband. However, this inevitably leads to trouble down the road. A Doll’s House was a masterpiece when it was written, and it continues to be so to this day.

A Doll’s House will run from February 13th to June 4th at the Hudson Theatre in New York, New York.
