Angelina Jolie’s ‘Maleficent’ Puts a Spell on 2014

ALTSince early 2010, even before Tim Burton’s billion dollar Alice in Wonderland swept theaters, rumors of a live-action twist on Sleeping Beauty were floating about. Maleficent would star Angelina Jolie as the titular evil witch, pairing her with Burton in his follow-up to Wonderland. When Burton eventually bailed, the hunt for another director was on, the Internet set ablaze from potential attached it-directors David O. Russell and Darren Aronofsky. The project felt like one of those blockbusters that forever exists as “what if” lore — that is, until production designer Robert Stromberg (Alice in Wonderland, Avatar) stepped into the directors chair.

Now, Maleficent is officially a go, with a set release date of March 14, 2014, which should give Jolie, Stromberg and Disney plenty of time to build a spectacle out of the film’s loose premise. So get ready — after years of imagining Jolie as the film’s wicked, green villainess, we can finally start imagining who should star opposite her as Sleeping Beauty. Suggestions?
