Andrew Garfield will produce and star in a biopic about late war correspondent Carlos Mavroleon.
Black Lion will centre on the life and death of the English/Greek shipping empire heir who became a war correspondent in Afghanistan after leaving his job as a Wall Street trader.
The film will detail his final assignment for 60 Minutes, during which her sneaked into Afghan tribal territories after President Clinton’s 1998 missile strikes against terrorist Osama bin Laden’s camps. He subsequently discovered a link between Pakistani officials and terrorist groups Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
Mavroleon was found dead under suspicious circumstances in a Pakistan motel room a few days later.
News of Garfield’s new role comes months after he won acclaim for his portrayal of real life pacifist Desmond Doss in Mel Gibson’s war movie Hacksaw Ridge. He earned British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), Golden Globes, and Academy Awards nominations for the role.
“It’s a story and a character that embodies the virtues and values of compassion, humility, sacrifice, love for your fellow human beings,” he gushed about Hacksaw Ridge to TheWrap.com in January (17).
“Obviously, we’re in a very divided state right now (following the election of controversial President Donald Trump) and it’s a deeply wounded time we’re in, and I think Desmond is a healer – he’s someone who goes into the deepest wounds of humanity and does the hard work of healing.”
He also played Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network.
