Christopher Plummer Gains Surprise Golden Globes Nod for Replacement Film Role

Christopher Plummer has earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role in movie All The Money In The World after he was drafted in to replace disgraced star Kevin Spacey.

The film’s director Ridley Scott, who was nominated for Best Director himself, finished shooting the biographical drama over the summer (17), with Spacey portraying oil tycoon Jean Paul Getty.

Last month (Nov17), Scott took the shock decision to cut the star out of the movie and reshoot his scenes with Plummer playing the character, after Star Trek Beyond actor Anthony Rapp alleged Spacey made inappropriate sexual advances towards him when he was just 14.

On Monday (11Dec17) Plummer, 87, received a surprise accolade – a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role – for a movie he wasn’t due to star in until a few weeks ago.

He will go up against Willem Dafoe, Armie Hammer, Richard Jenkins, and Sam Rockwell in the category.

Despite taking the role Plummer expressed regret about the circumstances that saw him replace Spacey in the film.

“The situation is very sad, because he’s such a talented guy. The whole circumstance is sad,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “But I’ve got to forget that and go and do it, because it’s a very well written script and Ridley has been very good.”

Scott was less forgiving, as he told Entertainment Weekly he had no hesitation in dropping Spacey for Plummer, who was reportedly, his first choice for the role. However, film bosses at Sony allegedly wanted someone with more star power.

“You can’t tolerate any kind of behavior like that. And it will affect the film,” Plummer said. “We cannot let one person’s action affect the good work of all these other people. It’s that simple.”

Spacey now faces allegations of sexual misbehavior from multiple men, as well as a U.K. police investigation into complaints made against him while he was artistic director of London’s Old Vic theatre.

The Golden Globe Awards take place on 7 January (18). All the Money in the World debuts in theatres later this month (Dec17).
