Married Coco songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez won’t be celebrating their latest Golden Globes nomination as they are preparing to say goodbye to their terminally-ill cat.
The Oscar-winning couple, famed for penning Frozen hit Let It Go, scored a nod for Best Original Song for writing Coco’s Remember Me tune on Monday (11Dec17), but the news emerged as the New York-based pair learned about the failed terror attack near the Big Apple’s Times Square.
Kristen and Robert are also struggling through the impending loss of their pet cat, who will soon have to be put down.
“It’s a strange morning here in New York,” Kristen told The Associated Press, admitting the Globes recognition is still a “giant thrill”, despite their personal circumstances.
“We’ll probably sing Remember Me to him,” she added of their ailing furry friend, revealing the track, which is performed by R&B star Miguel and collaborator Natalia Lafourcade, has become somewhat of a mourning song.
Robert said, “That song has come in handy with the passing of many loved ones as we’ve been working on that movie. It’s very sad, but it’s a good song to have.”
He even sang the farewell tune at his mother’s funeral earlier this year, months before Coco, which follows a boy who learns about his family’s past through music, hit theaters in November (17).
“We’re dropping a lot of feelings,” Kristen shared. “It’s one of those days.”
The Globes nomination is their second for Best Original Song – Let It Go was also shortlisted in the same category for the 2014 awards, but lost out to U2’s Ordinary Love from the biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. The Frozen track went on earn the pair its first Oscar win.
