James Mangold to Direct Patty Hearst Film

Moviemaker James Mangold has reportedly signed on to direct an untitled film about kidnapped heiress Patty Hearst.

The movie will be inspired by Jeffrey Toobin’s book American Heiress and, according to Variety, Elle Fanning is in talks to portray Hearst, who was abducted by left-wing terrorist group the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) in 1974.

After being isolated and threatened with death, she became supportive of their cause and made propaganda announcements on the organisation’s behalf.

Hearst was found 19 months after she was abducted, by which time she was a fugitive wanted for serious crimes.

She was held in custody and eventually found guilty of bank robbery.

Logan filmmaker Mangold has written the screenplay alongside Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander and will also produce the project. It is unclear when filming will begin shooting, but it is expected to be the director’s next movie.
