Kumail Nanjiani Jokes About ‘The Big Sick’ Globes Snub on Twitter

Actor Kumail Nanjiani is using comedy to deal with his critically-acclaimed movie The Big Sick failing to score any Golden Globes nominations by pretending it’s Steven Spielberg’s favorite film of 2017.

The funnyman, who wrote and stars in the film, took to Twitter on Monday morning (11Dec17) after the autobiographical drama was snubbed by voters at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the people behind the Golden Globe Awards, and sent out a post as legendary director Spielberg.

“Hey gang. This is Steven Spielberg tweeting from Kumail’s phone,” the message read. “My fave movie this yr (year) was The Big Sick. It’s avail on Amazon Prime & iTunes & all that. Great movie to watch w (with) the fam. I watched it w my family (the Spielbergs) & we all loved it. Handing phone back to Kumail now (sic).”

The Twitter prank prompted a number of followers to join in the fun, turning the post viral, with Star Wars: The Last Jedi filmmaker Rian Johnson among those getting in on the joke.

Johnson quipped, “Ok this is Kumail tweeting from Rian’s phone- Steven Spielberg stole my phone, he fake-handed it back to me then ran off. If anyone has eyes on Steven Spielberg please tell him I’m not mad I just want my phone back it has wedding pictures on it. Also go see the last jedi on 12/15 (sic)”.

Nanjiani continued to keep up the Spielberg front when his initial tweet started hitting headlines.
Spielberg has yet to weigh in on the joke or share his actual thoughts on The Big Sick, which was recently named among the American Film Institute’s Movies of the Year.

The drama, which chronicles the early days of Nanjiani’s inter-racial relationship with his now-wife and co-writer Emily V. Gordon, has also picked up nominations for the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards and the Critics’ Choice Awards.
