Logan has shredded the North American box office competition in its opening weekend (03-05Mar17).

The superhero film starring Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart has earned $85 million to beat out The Lego Batman Movie for best opening weekend of 2017. The film also beat its predecessor, 2013’s The Wolverine, which opened at $53 million.

Logan serves as the last film Hugh will star in as Wolverine. The actor has previously opened up about feeling emotional as he promotes the movie.

“It’s kinda like leaving the best part of your life,” he explained on Good Morning America last month (Feb17). “There’s a point where you should go and this is just that time. It (the character) will never leave me. The fans come up to me every day of my life and I love ’em, this character I love; I don’t regret anything. I’m just really lucky, blessed and I’m happy. I won’t miss a thing.”

The movie has garnered a slew of positive reviews from fans and critics and the 48-year-old couldn’t be more proud.

“We tried to make something that didn’t feel like a comic book movie, we wanted it to be a love letter to the fans, but a movie that people who have never ever seen a comic book movie would go to, and I think people are surprised by it and it’s been really, really gratifying,” he added. “And thankfully, even though this is my last one, people are like, ‘No, don’t make it the last…!’

“Every frame of this film I put everything into, and I owe it to the fans, I’m so grateful to the fans.”
Meanwhile, horror film Get Out follows in second with $24 million, while The Shack, which stars Octavia Spencer and Sam Worthington, comes in third with $16 million.

The Lego Batman Movie and John Wick, Chapter 2 round out the top five respectively.
