Martin Luther King, Jr., once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Well, so is Christopher Nolan.
The helmer of this generation’s iconic Batman trilogy (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises) and producer on the forthcoming Superman film Man of Steel might be the most monumental creative cinematic force in accordance with DC Comics today, but the director has no interest in pursuing these heroes further for a Justice League movie.
At a press conference for The Dark Knight Rises, Nolan told E!, “We’re finished with all we’re doing with Batman. This is the end of our take on the character … I’ve got no plans to do anything more, and certainly, no involvement with any Justice League project … Batman will outlive us all, and our interpretation was ours. Obviously, we consider it definitive and kind of finished. The great thing about Batman is he lives on for future generations to reinterpret, and obviously, Warners will have to decide in the future what they’re going to do with him … We’ve had our say on the character.”
So what could this mean for the Justice League movie in question — a project whose longstanding rumored were revitalized after the terrific success of the Marvel superhero roundup movie The Avengers? On the one hand, Nolan wasn’t assigned scripting duties in the first place. That responsibility has been placed in the hands of Will Beall, screenwriter of the upcoming film Gangster Squad. But so far, no directors or producers have been named. That is where Nolan’s signature touch could have come in, making Justice League not only a sure-fire crowd pleaser, but also a critical hit.
Without his voice, the project could go one of two ways. One: an attempt at imitating the Nolan style might be made, resulting in something a bit hokey and overdone. Two: the film could vie for a more light-hearted, madcap, but relatively weightless motif. This is thinking pessimistically, but that’s what immersing yourself fully in the Gotham mindset does to you.
Do you have hope for the Justice League without a Nolan on board to guide? Do you think creativity and innovation will prevail? If so, you’re more of a Kent than a Wayne. But hey, that’s not a bad thing. We wouldn’t have a League without both of ’em.
