Danny Boyle Would “Love To Direct” New ’28 Days Later’ Film

Danny BoyleDanny Boyle is a jack-of-all-genres filmmaker. The Oscar winning auteur has tackled horror, science fiction, comedy and more throughout his career, inspiring those that get the honor of working with him and all who get to see his movies. Very recently, his name has been referenced in rumors about a continuation of the 28 Days Later franchise that he spawned back in 2002, and despite being a fiercely original artist who evolves with each successive film, he admitted to me today at the 127 Hours press day that he’d welcome the opportunity to return to the zombie infested world that he created.

“I’d love to direct the third part of it, Boyle enthusiastically proclaimed. “Whether it happens or not, it’s partly a time thing I suppose now. But what I said was I so enjoyed watching the second one, because I wasn’t really involved with it, and I realized the pull there is of that franchise. So I’d love to direct the third part of it.”

That should put some speculation to bed. Boyle would love to direct 28 Months Later (NOT an official title, but it seems pretty safe to assume), but with a busy schedule that includes producing an ambitious science fiction project titled Paani (to be directed by Shekhar Kapur) and directing the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics, it seems far-fetched at the moment. Though I love what Juan Carlos-Fresnadillo did with the sequel to Boyle’s adrenaline pumping zombie flick, I’d rather the originator return to the fold than anyone else.
