‘Dragon’ Sequel In The Works

Though it’s $44 million opening weekend was less than spectacular, DreamWorks’ How To Train Your Dragon breathed fire all over the competition this month, consistently challenging newer releases and reclaiming the number one spot at the box-office weeks after it opened. Now that the film has pulled $180 million in domestic receipts and $372 worldwide, the studio is gearing up for a (unsurprising) sequel.

The Hollywood Reporter states that DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg is keen on cross-platform franchise implementation for the brand, which will include a live area show (akin to “Walking With Dinosaurs” that plays in venues like the Staples Center in Los Angeles and Allstate Arena in Chicago), a TV series  an online virtual world based on the film’s environments and characters.

“It’s not where you start, it’s where you finish,” Katzenberg told analysts about Dragon during a conference call to discuss quarterly earnings. He went on to preliminarily set a third or fourth quarter 2013 release from Dragons 2, though that will likely change as the project develops.
