We now have the primary cast set for Lionsgate’s adaptation of The Hunger Games! Joining Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen is Josh Hutcherson as Peeta and Liam Hemsworth as Gale. Honestly, I was never emotionally invested in the male leads because, though the characters are important, they’re secondary to Katniss. And since Lawrence will make a fairly excellent Katniss, the real question regards how Hutcherson and Hemsworth will react to and work with her.
I think Gary Ross and the casting directors got the basic characterizations for these two right. Hemsworth is a more hotheaded kind of a guy, like Gale, while Hutcherson can definitely nail the softer, son-of-a-baker-but-tough side of Peeta. They’ll do fine and shouldn’t upset too many fans.
But they are upsetting me because these little shits will get to make out with Jennifer Lawrence! Curse you Hutcherson and Hemsworth!
