New Trailer for ‘The Hobbit’ Looks an Awful Lot Like the Old One — VIDEO

Gandalf The Hobbit TrailerWith just five months to go before the theatrical release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, fans are clambering for every glimpse of Bilbo Baggins’ Middle Earth they can get. The release of a second trailer for the film offers just that — another glimpse. To the casual viewer, the new trailer will look identical to the first. The discerning fan, however, will notice that there is a total of four seconds of new footage.

As with the first trailer, we open with Bilbo’s voiceover and a shot of Frodo leaving Bag End, followed by Bilbo penning his saga. As Gandalf (played by Sir Ian McKellen) approaches Bilbo (Martin Freeman) with his adventurous proposition, we see our first bit of new footage: In the new trailer, Bilbo is not smoking his pipe. These are clearly really big, monumentally and fundamentally important changes. The trailer’s biggest —these terms are relative — reveal happens at about the two minute mark, where in place of footage of Gandalf kicking some ass on a stony hilltop, we see a frightened Bilbo peeking under a log and then the whole gang running through the forest.

Four seconds is hardly a groundbreaking revolution; it’s barely enough to whet the appetite of the most avid Tolkien fans. But certain elements of both trailers are enough to give us goosebumps. That Celtic singing gets us every time, and the appearance of Gollum in the final moments is bone-chilling. So, as we head into the final stretch, we’ll take every four seconds we can get.
