Sundance 2011: ‘Pariah’ Bought By Focus

Dee ReesSundance wouldn’t be Sundance without the quirky popular comedies (two this year with My Idiot Brother and Cedar Rapids) and the overly melodramatic. This year’s super serious drama Pariah, the coming of age story of a lesbian teenager in Brooklyn, just got picked up by Focus Features. Written and directed by Dee Rees, the film has been received well at the festival; so much so that Focus also bought Rees’ next project that she’ll write and likely direct. Like Precious two years back, Pariah is executive produced by a big name: Spike Lee. I’m all for exploring the darker sides of humanity, but is it too much to ask for a least a dance break sometimes?
