See What The Cast of ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’ Looks Like Over 20 Years Later

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape premiered in 1993 and since then many of it’s stars have gone on to have major success. What is it about this quirky movie that has us coming back to it over 20 years later? The story has such relatable elements for people who feel trapped in their lives, figuratively and literally, as well as the heartwarming elements of  a story about family. Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio both appear in this film, but Leo’s role of Arnie really stands out. So what has this cast been up to since ’93? Check out what they look like now!

Johnny Depp - Gilbert Grape

We all know what Johnny Depp has been up to since starring as Gilbert in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? He's had numerous successes since then with Sleepy Hollow, Blow, playing Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of Caribbean series, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, and more. While he's had his share of success, he's also produced some massive box office bombs like The Tourist, Rango, The Rum Diary, Transcendence, and Mortdecai. His 2015 film Black Mass, where he looked nothing like the dreamy Johnny Depp we're all used to, proved that Johnny can always come back from a loss. He'll be reprising his role of the Mad Hatter in 2016's Alice Through the Looking Glass and it looks even better than the original film.

Leonardo DiCaprio - Arnie Grape

Like Johnny, we ALL know where Leo is now. His role of Arnie Grape earned him his first ever Oscar nomination and to this day we still argue that he was robbed! After Gilbert Grape, Leo went on to have major Hollywood success with films like Romeo + Juliet, Titanic, The Man in the Iron Mask, Catch Me If You Can, The Aviator (where he landed his second Oscar nom), and much more. Over the years, it's become a running gag that Leo will never win an Oscar, despite how dedicated he is to all of his roles. Did you know he actually cut his hand while filming Django Unchained and just kept going? Yup, that is Leo's REAL blood in that scene. After winning the Golden Globe for The Revenant, it seems like 2016 might be the first year that Leo gets the Oscar.

Since Gilbert Grape, you may have noticed she's worked with Will Ferrell a bit - first as Buddy's stepmother in Elf and then as his mother in Step Brothers, which reunited her with Gilbert Grape co-star John C. Reilly. She's also had success with The Brave One, The Proposal, and The Help.

After the movie, she got a few parts for similar character types in Picket Fences, Touched By an Angel, and Wolf Girl in 2001. She didn't act for over a decade, until she appeared in the 2014 short film Mother, though after watching it, her role is a blink and you'll miss it moment.
