Well, it appears that Bryan Singer is listening. A few vocal critics have noted that despite X-Men: First Class’ setting in 1962 and the primary metaphor the X-Men represent, there was very little discussion of race or the Civil Rights movement in the film (just look at all those white people to the left!). They even killed the only black guy like 15 minutes after we meet him! And he had a cool power! But Singer, director of the first two X-Men movies (you know, the good ones) and overseer on the other two, is interested in possibly exploring the Civil Rights movement or the Vietnam war in upcoming First Class sequels (which are inevitable).
Personally, I’m all for it. In the same interview, Singer says that he “(doesn’t) know if every movie has to be a history lesson” and he’s quite right. I’m not one for exploring racial tensions at every opportunity, but they did miss a really easy and inventive way to talk about it. And First Class did pretty much just avoid the subject in its entirety, instead focusing on the super evil Nazis, who everyone can agree to hate. It’d take a really bold comic book movie to focus on race like people think First Class should’ve, but I think the talent they have could pull it off.
Then again, if they go the Vietnam way it could mean Platoon meets X-Men and that would be amaaaaazing.
