Today’s WTF moment belongs to Grey’s Anatomy’s Patrick Dempsey, who was announced today to be joining the cast of Michael Bay’s Transformers 3. Variety reports that the TV star will play the boss of Megan Fox’s character and the actor himself told reporters in Brazil this week that it’s a “dark character.”

In confirming the casting news, Paramount Pictures said director Bay will begin lensing the third pic this month, though Dempsey won’t be on set just yet. He’ll first shoot the indie pic Flypaper, a crime-comedy about a man caught between two holdups at the same bank who is in love with one of the bank tellers. The Hangover scribes Jon Lucas and Scott Moore penned the script.

Casting news on the bloated third installment of the franchise continues to get more puzzling and enticing at the same time. John Malkovich and Frances McDormand’s involvement was announced last month and drew a few question marks in fans heads…mainly because no one could’ve expected actors of their caliber to sign on for a sequel to a film that was so widely panned (2009’s Revenge of the Fallen). The answer to that lies in the size of the paycheck that the esteemed thespians will receive for appearing in the film. Dempsey’s casting will surely entice a few moviegoers who fall outside the series’ target demographic – a smart move for Paramount.

Transformers 3 will be released on July 1st, 2011.
