Christopher Nolan’s Tenet still on course for big release on July 17

Movie bosses remain confident Christopher Nolan’s new film, Tenet, will open in cinemas on July 17, 2020, despite ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.

The movie, starring Robert Pattinson and John David Washington, is now set up to be the first major blockbuster to hit theatres since March when the industry shut down amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Calling fans back to the theatres, Cinemark CEO Mark Zoradi tells Deadline, “We’ve been in close contact with Warner Bros. and they remain optimistic and positive as well as Christopher Nolan about the July 17 opening.”

His statement comes despite the fact officials in New York and Los Angeles have yet to set a date for the re-opening of movie theatres.

Zoradi insists his cinemas will be able to operate at a profit even if they are only half full, while observing safety guidelines expected to be handed down by officials.

“We can’t promise you nor Warner Bros that Tenet can open on July 17,” Zoradi adds, “but we have to choose a date that you can plan to.”

He expects a decision to be firmed up before the end of June.
