Suicide Squad is finally coming to theaters this weekend. In the movie, we see villains teaming up on a dangerous mission for the government in exchange for leniency. A lot of these villains are also psychopaths. So how did the actors prepare for their diabolical roles? It looks like they basically lost their minds on set. Here are 9 of the craziest things that happened on the set of Suicide Squad.
1. Jared Leto sent Margot Robbie a rat.
The actor wanted to send his character’s crew some gifts, but this one is disgusting. He sent the blonde actress a black box with a live rat in it.
2. A therapist was kept on set just in case…
We know that Jared Leto was going all in to get into the Joker’s head so the director took precautions.
Adam Beach told E!,”We kind of have like a therapist on board if you fall off the wagon and really are villainous. Us actors explore very fine thin lines going to the dark side and he wants to make sure we finish a movie and don’t disappear somewhere and then don’t show up for work.”
3. Jai Courtney burned himself with cigarettes while he got high.
The actor was also told to get in the head space of a violent criminal. “… I happened to eat some mushrooms…” the actor told Empire “and I did self-inflict some burns.”
4. Jared Leto sent Will Smith bullets.
Luckily the action star wasn’t gifted with a live animal. Instead, Leto sent him bullets with a letter. This gift actually makes since because Smith is playing an assassin called Deadshot.
5. The cast was interrogated by detectives.
Actor Jai Courtney revealed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that, “It was all part of this process. And there were these sessions that were happening and people were kinda walking out of them like it was some bizarre sort of therapy and everyone was saying, ‘Did you see the police guy?'”
6. Jared Leto had a henchman give the cast a pig’s head.
According to Viola Davis she didn’t think the actor was sane after this stunt. “Now I’m terrified as a person,” the actress told Vanity Fair “thinking ‘Is he crazy?’ but the second part was ‘Oh sh*t! I got to have my stuff together.’ You talk about commitment and then he sends Margot Robbie a black rat. It was still alive in a box. She screamed, and then she kept it.”
7. The cast gave each other tattoos, and Margot misspelled one.
The director got the cast to give each other tattoos in Harley Quinn’s tattoo parlor. Margot Robbie tattooed someone “skwad” drunkenly. It might have started a trend. Will Smith gave Joel Kinnaman a “skwad” tattoo. Jai Courtney also got “skwad” tattooed on his arm.
8. The cast had to fight each other during rehearsal.
“It wasn’t a normal rehearsal,” Ayer told Yahoo! “we’d talk about their lives, their history, and really got them to open up as people to each other. I also had them fight. I had them fight each other. You learn a lot about who a person really is when you punch them in the face. It gets rid of a lot of the actor stuff.”
9. Leto gave Karen Fukuharasome rather… “explicit” gifts.
A great memory since this was Fukuhara’s first film role.
