For the past four years, the Twilight saga has dominated at the annual MTV Movie Awards, snagging trophies for 16 of its 23 total nominations — including a win every year for Best Movie and, more importatntly, Best Kiss. Fan votes led stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart to multiple golden popcorn victories in hopes of seeing the couple finally lock lips on stage, and it seemed likely that 2013 would be no different.
Shockingly, though, the final chapter in the brooding vampire series, Breaking Dawn Pt. 2, received just one nomination. This year, the fandom’s only hope for a win rests solely on the hunky, broad shoulders of Taylor Lautner in the Best Shirtless Performance category.
Because Hollywood.com feels deeply for our favorite vampires and werewolves who have been snubbed this year, we’re taking a look back at the most memorable Twilight moments from MTV Movie Awards past to help ease the pain in your supernatural-loving hearts. From near-kisses to a solo makeout sesh, let’s take a look at the most jaw-dropping smooch-related moments below:
Stewart and Pattinson have accepted every coveted golden popcorn award for best onscreen kiss since 2009 — and each year their speech has been more bizarre than the last. No, seriously. (And just for your reference, this right here is what a best kiss acceptance speech should look like.) In 2009 the duo won their first Best Kiss award for their angsty teen lip-locks in Twilight, and when the actors went to seal the deal they chose to tease the crowd with a near-kiss instead. It was endearingly frustrating.
In 2010, the couple snagged their second award for an on-screen smooch. This time, Pattinson tried to sneak in a kiss — but Stewart intervened, being her classic, fidgety self. She turned, he missed, and the two ran off stage like two flirty teens on their way to a closet for their seven minutes in heaven. Awwww.
In 2011 the real-life couple won the award for Eclipse. But to avoid disappointing fans yet again, Pattinson decided that the kiss belonged to someone else and rushed into the crowd to lay one on his other costar: Lautner. Although the fans appreciated the fact that a kiss did indeed occur, it was still not the Bella/Edward moment they were hoping for. Sigh.
For their most recent win back in 2012, Stewart hit stage all by her lonesome to accept for Breaking Dawn Pt. 1. After calling out for a number of suitors to take Pattinson’s place — including her Snow White and the Huntsman costar Charlize Theron — the Twilight star decided it would be best to pretend to make out with herself. It was awkward and uncomfortable, and fans were in disbelief that after four long years and countless votes, they were denied even the simplest of pecks.
