Aladdin is set to become the fourth biggest Memorial Day opening in U.S. movie history, if Disney estimates ring true.
The film, starring Will Smith, is topping out around the $117 million mark after a huge four-day weekend (May 24-27, 2019), and that will make director Guy Ritchie’s musical remake one of the big four May weekend releases.
Aladdin is expected to bump Fast & Furious 6 to fifth place on the all-time list and sit behind fellow Disney movie Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and X-Men: The Last Stand.
Smith is stunned by the box office numbers and took to social media late on Monday night to thank fans for their support.
Posting a photo of himself in character as the Genie on the set, he wrote: “Thank you to Everybody who came out this weekend. #Aladdin. We LOVE this Movie. We are humbled and honored that you are feeling the same.”
