Constance Wu’s Crazy Rich Asians premiere dress took 765 hours to create

The dress Constance Wu wore to the Crazy Rich Asians premiere took approximately 765 hours to make.

Designed by Ralph and Russo, the actress wore a shimmery silver Bardot gown to the Los Angeles event on Tuesday (07Aug18), which was decorated with striking white tassels that fell over her arms and hips.

Following the bash, Constance, who plays Rachel Chu in the upcoming romantic comedy, took to Twitter to share just how much effort went into her outfit.

“For the @CrazyRichMovie premiere I got to wear a beautiful @ralphandrusso couture gown, 490 Hours of Embroidery, 90 Carats of Diamonds and I arrived in a @rollsroycecars Ghost. Not bad for a little ol’ theatre kid from RVA (Richmond, Virginia)!! #CrazyRichAsians,” she wrote.

According to Harper’s Bazaar U.K., the dress required another 275 hours to complete once the 200,000 crystals and 90 carats of diamonds were embroidered.

The outfit was selected by stylist Micaela Erlanger, who explained that this specific gown was chosen for very particular reasons.

“In history, tassels have almost always been a symbol of power and prestige, not to mention they make for a glamorous detail,” she told Vogue U.S. “This movie is so important for so many reasons, and I felt that Constance should look both powerful and glamorous.”

The 36-year-old’s co-stars looked equally glamorous on the night, with Ocean’s 8 star Awkwafina sporting a ladylike satin pink Reem Acra gown featuring long sleeves and a full skirt, while Constance Lau opted to wear a dress made by Singaporean brand Time Taken to Make a Dress. The intricate outfit featured fringing, embroidery and cut-out detailing as the colour gradually changed from angelic white to a deep red in an ombre-style skirt.

And like Constance, British actress Gemma Chan went for full-on sparkle in a dazzling gold and silver sequin number designed by Oscar de la Renta.
