Avatar director James Cameron was left disappointed with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The movie directed by J.J. Abrams was the first feature film released after bosses at The Walt Disney Company acquired series originator George Lucas’ firm Lucasfilm in 2012.
And although Cameron respects Abrams, he didn’t think The Force Awakens, which was released in December (15), was an original take on the Star Wars universe that was first introduced to the public with the release of Lucas’ 1977 epic.
“Well… George Lucas is a friend of mine and George and I had a good conversation about it,” Cameron reveals in a YouTube interview with reporter Hannah Litchfield. “I don’t want to say too much about the film as I have a lot of respect for J.J. Abrams. I want to see where they’re taking it next, see what they’re doing with it. But I gotta say I think that George’s six films, had more innovative visual imagination. And this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before, and characters you had seen before. It took a few baby steps forward with new characters. But for me the jury is out, I want to see where they go with it.”
Meanwhile, Cameron has plenty of his own creative projects to focus on right now, as it was reported earlier this month (Jun16) he is re-teaming with bosses at National Geographic Channel to develop expedition documentary Search for Atlantis.
In addition to this, the Aliens filmmaker is also occupied with writing two Terminator franchise sequels and directing four follow-ups to his groundbreaking 2009 sci-fi release Avatar.
