Director Steven Spielberg has given movie fans their first look at the cast of his revamp of hit musical West Side Story.
The first picture of the new cast, released by Twentieth Century Fox, shows actor Ansel Elgort and newcomer Rachel Zegler in their roles as star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria, alongside the cast members who comprise rival gangs the Jets and the Sharks.
Tony-nominated actor Mike Faist is leader of the Jets, Riff, while David Alvarez will star as Maria’s brother Bernardo – leader of rival gang the Sharks.
Elgort will take on the role played by Richard Beymer in the Oscar-winning 1961 movie in the new version of the musical, which is inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. In the film, Tony falls for the sister of a gang leader, who is waging a war with rivals led by his best friend.
The project, which is based on a new script by Tony Kushner, is currently in production.
