War for the Planet of the Apes wins U.K. box office battle

The new Planet Of The Apes movie won last weekend’s (14-16Jul17) battle at the U.K. box office.

War for the Planet of the Apes, which stars Andy Serkis as ape leader Caesar, topped the British box office chart with takings of $9.24 million.

The film, the third in director Matt Reeves‘ series, based on the 1968 science-fiction classic, has won rave reviews and is also North America’s top movie, earning $56.5 million in its opening weekend on the other side of the Atlantic.

Animated comedy caper Despicable Me 3 is in the second spot with healthy takings of $4.95 million from its third weekend in U.K. cinemas, while at number three is last week’s top film Spider-Man: Homecoming with $4.82 million.

Another animation, Cars 3, opened with takings of $3.38 million, placing it in fourth, and rounding out the top five is Baby Driver with $1.17 million.
