‘Avengers’ Pass ‘Dark Knight’ Box Office!

ALTOn Friday, June 1 after just 29 days of release the box office juggernaut “The Avengers” will surpass “The Dark Knight” to become the 3rd highest grossing film of all-time in North America! “The Dark Knight” was the very definition of the word-of-mouth blockbuster, but was more a marathon runner reaching the $500 million plateau in North America after 45 days (vs.”The Avengers” record 23 days) and played for a total of 231 days in theaters to ultimately reach $533,345,358.

The 2008 Christopher Nolan masterpiece boasted an incredible Oscar winning and legendary performance by the late Heath Ledger as the Joker and solidified its mythological status as only the second film at the time to earn over half a billion dollars at the box office (at that point only “Titanic” had reached this benchmark, ‘Avatar” would come later as it was released on December 18, 2009). “The Avengers” should reach the $550 million mark by the end of the weekend in just 31 days and thus continue its astounding box office run.
