Box Office Analysis, July 31: ‘Miami Vice’ Squeezes Out ‘Pirates 2’

There’s a new sheriff in town. Actually, make that two undercover Miami-Dade vice cops.

Michael Mann’s gritty update to his hit ‘80s TV show Miami Vice, starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, debuted at the top of the North American box office this weekend with $25.2 million. It edged out reigning champ, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, which came in second with $20.4 million.

Teen flick John Tucker Must Die, opened in third place with $14 million, while the CGI-animated The Ant Bully, which featured the voice talents of Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and Nicolas Cage, didn’t do as well in the overpopulated field of family pictures, coming in fifth with $8.1 million.

The independent film Little Miss Sunshine, however, opened strongly in limited release. The quirky film starring Greg Kinnear and Steve Carell, took in $356,863 in only seven theaters in New York and Los Angeles for a per screen average of $50,980.

The top 12 movies grossed $114.8 million, up 2.51 percent from last year’s draw of $111.9 but down 19.52 percent from last weekend, which took in $142.6 million.
