“I’m a blessing to whoever gets to really know me,” DMX once said. The legendary rapper is also a blessing to everyone who knows and loves his music.

DMX died Friday April 9, at 50 years old after being hospitalized for a week following a drug overdose and heart attack, Pitchfork reports after confirmation from a representative of the rapper’s family.

“We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50-years-old,” says the statement shared with Pitchfork. “Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever.
