It couldn’t have been easy thing to steal scenes from two of the funnier men on the planet.
But that’s just what the up-and-comer Isla Fisher does in the hilarious The Wedding Crashers. Starring alongside Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, the Aussie actress–best known for her stint in the popular Australian soap Home and Away–more than held her own as Gloria, the wacky red-headed spitfire nymphomaniac Vaughn‘s character, Jeremy, has the misfortune of meeting at a wedding. Or maybe it isn’t so misfortunate for him.
Hollywood.com had a brief chat with the bubbly Fisher to talk about her breakout role, but she confessed she had been having a rather tiring and very busy day talking to the press. We promised her we’d keep things as short and sweet as possible.
I know I laughed my butt off, but how hard did you laugh making this movie? Was there a scene you just couldn’t get through?
Isla Fisher: “There were times when Vince would go off on a tangent, improvising a speech–when I was off camera–and I would have to turn away. Couldn’t let him see my face, cracking up. Of course, the dinner table scene was probably the hardest. When Christopher Walken was giving his speech at the end, as well as “Grandma”, Ellen [Albertini Dow], making her speech, it was just so funny. It was already such a long day, so we were all a bit punchy.”
What’s one thing about Christopher Walken we might not know?
Fisher: “The one thing that surprised me most about Christopher Walken is that between takes, instead of being ferried back to a first-class trailer, he would hang with the cast and crew, read a book. He was really approachable.”
I’m sure you don’t play favorites, but, come on, who was your favorite among the guys?
Fisher: “Well, of course, I spent most of my time with Vince, who’s soooo funny. I didn’t get to spend as much time with Owen. But the times I did spend with Owen, he was such a nice and gentle guy. Honestly, I couldn’t pick. Wait, I would say my favorite person on set was Henry Gibson, who played the priest. He’s such a sweetheart!”
What’s your favorite part of a wedding?
Fisher: “Probably the dancing.”
For your own wedding, if you found out someone was crashing it, what would you do?
Fisher: “It would depend on who it was. If it was Vince and Owen, I would increase security to see if they could break through.”
You and your fiancé, [HBO’s Ali G] Sacha Baron Cohen, are all over the British tabloids. What’s your favorite story you’ve heard about yourself so far?
Fisher: “I know! The craziest stories. The one I love the most is that I’m getting married at the estate of this famous Australia millionaireness, Rose Hancock, whose is famous for her collection of shoes, a lá Imelda Marcos. Apparently, I’m getting married at her house in Perth, in a Christian ceremony…it was this whole list of the most incredibly ludicrous things. Even on this press tour, I’m misquoted. People just make up the most insane things!”
People love the drama. Speaking of that, what’s the difference between an Australian soap opera and an American one?
Fisher: “Australian soaps tend to me more like American sitcoms. We don’t really have an equivalent to the American soap, with the daytime wind machine, same set, long speeches. We don’t have that. With our soaps, you can tell that they’re taking the piss out of themselves.”
Well, now that you’re this breakout star, what will you demand on your next film?
Fisher: [laughs] “Oh, you know…a pony. A Shetland pony. A white Shetland pony.”
The Wedding Crashers is now playing in theaters nationwide.
