Hamnet Trailer: Paul Mescal & Jessie Buckley Bring Shakespeare’s Story to Life

Focus Features has dropped the first teaser trailer for Hamnet, a historical drama starring Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare and Jessie Buckley as his wife, Agnes. Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel, the film explores the love and loss that inspired Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Plot + Cast 

Set in Elizabethan England, the film follows Agnes as she copes with the death of her son and her husband’s rising fame. The cast includes Joe Alwyn, Emily Watson, Olivia Lynes, Noah Jupe, and David Wilmot.

Directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland), who co-wrote the script with O’Farrell, the film is produced by Liza Marshall, Sam Mendes, and Steven Spielberg.

Hamnet Release Date

Hamnet opens in select theaters November 27, expanding nationwide December 12, 2025. The film marks Zhao’s return to form after Eternals and is already seen as a major awards contender this season.
