Wednesday: ‘Julia Roberts Tribute’

[IMG:L]Julia Roberts Tribute — 8/7, 11:30/10:30c on AMC

Everyone gets a televised tribute these days–you have to take the good ones when you get them.

And with arguably the biggest actress of the last two decades being the honoree, this would qualify as a good one…for those who like stars.

Because the 22nd Annual American Cinematheque Award ceremony–which honors “an extraordinary artist in the entertainment industry who is fully engaged in his or her work and is committed to making a significant contribution to the art of the motion pictures”–is quite the star-studded affair.

The Pretty Woman–and more recently Charlie Wilson’s War–actress was feted before the likes of past winners George Clooney (2006), Denzel Washington (2002) and Bruce Willis (2000), as well as her Charlie Wilson costar Tom Hanks, who is surprisingly not a Cinematheque Award recipient.

[IMG:R]Tyler Perry’s House of Payne — 10/9c on TBS
Madea (Tyler Perry) makes a cameo in this Scrooge-like episode of House of Payne. So for those keeping score, that means Perry directed/starred in this episode, produced/wrote other episodes, created the show, and got his name put in the title. Where does this guy find the time for his non-side projects?!

[IMG:L]Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town — 8/7c on ABC
In the sea of age-old holiday-themed specials airing this week, comes this 1970 classic (which is relatively recent compared to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Charlie Brown). Fred Astaire narrates the tale of the Kringle family, a tale you already know so well.
