The Golden Globes are back but it’s not business as usual

In 2021, thanks to a Los Angeles Times article, it was revealed that none of the 87 individuals driving the Golden Globes were black journalists. They additionally raised suspicions that intimate relationships between film studios and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) may have clouded nominations or skewed results to favor some films over others — opening up issues such as racism and corruption which had long been suspected but rarely discussed. Many notable actors such as Scarlett Johansson and Tom Cruise boycotted the ceremony as well as NBC, the usual home to the annual broadcast, who issued their own statement in that they would refuse to air the ceremony until real change had been enacted by the organization.

Since then, the HFPA has been actively addressing its diversity concerns by expanding its ranks. The organization added 103 new international voters to join the 96 existing voters. This was done to help to create a more equitable and inclusive representation of film criticism on a global scale. They then went on to break down the representation now seen within their voting body.

“This diverse voting group represents 62 different countries around the world. Combined with the current membership, the total Golden Globe Awards voting body is now 52% female, 51.8% racially and ethnically diverse, with 19.6% Latinx, 12.1% Asian, 10.1% Black, and 10.1% Middle Eastern.”
