Soon, cinephiles won’t have George Lucas to kick around anymore. The 67-year-old mogul, once among Hollywood’s most revered filmmakers but increasingly the target of criticism on account of sub-par late-career output and what many view as excessive Star Wars profiteering, told the New York Times today that he is walking away from blockbuster filmmaking to focus on so-called “personal films.” Future efforts from Lucas, who produced the upcoming Tuskegee Airmen epic Red Tails, will be “small in scope, esoteric in subject and screened mostly in art houses,” the kinds of films he allegedly had always intended to make before he hatched the idea to remake Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress in space. The lone exception to Lucas’ anti-blockbuster credo would we a fifth Indiana Jones film, the Times declares, to which we say, “Get thee to the arthouse, George!”
In all seriousness, we wish Lucas the best of luck in his Terrence Malick twilight.
