Get ready to meet the man behind the toy when Lightyear hits theaters. Lightyear follows Buzz Lightyear, the hero, not the toy, as he’s trapped on a hostile planet. This science-fiction action-adventure from Disney and Pixar is a spin-off and addition to the Toy Story franchise. Here is everything we know about the upcoming movie.
Who is Buzz Lightyear?
While some characters are straight to the point, who Buzz Lightyear is in Toy Story lore is kind of complicated. In the original Toy Story movies, he is one of the two main characters. Buzz is a fictional sentient action figure based on an in-universe television show of the same name. The television show features the TV character Buzz, not Toy Buzz, and can be watched in the 2000 direct-to-video film Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins and the television series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. Originally, Toy Buzz believes himself to be the TV Buzz but comes to terms with being a toy. Lightyear stars “real” Buzz, or rather, the Buzz that TV Buzz was based on.
Buzz Lightyear quotes we love from the trailer
In such a short trailer, there’s so much to be excited about. Buzz Lightyear, played by Chris Evans, is an astronaut put in a situation out of this world: “We’re being pursued by a… just a massive robot!” Cue Zurg.
Buzz and his crew are trapped on another planet for a year and attempting to go home. As he says in the trailer, ”A year of work for a four-minute flight. Isn’t that something?” While we hear so much about events, we never hear about the planning. There are 240 seconds in four minutes. This means that each day of the year accounts for a second and a half of the flight.
While Moana joked that all Disney princesses have animal side kicks, Buzz Lightyear gets his very own, a robotic cat companion named Sox. His most iconic line in the trailer is “I can provide sleep sounds if you’d like. I have several options. Summer night. Ocean paradise. Whale calls?” Buzz chooses white noise and Sox begins to hiss. Here’s to hoping we get a preview of the other modes in the movie.
Why isn’t Tim Allen in the Buzz Lightyear movie
The answer to this goes back to “Who is Buzz Lightyear?” Tim Allen voices Toy Buzz and TV Buzz. Since Toy Buzz and TV Buzz are inspired by an in-universe hero, Chris Evans voices the hero. In Pixar logic, a hero probably wouldn’t voice the TV show and Toy character that’s inspired by them.
Lightyear movie release date
Lightyear is set to hit theaters on June 17th, 2022. As of right now, there is no answer as to when it will be available on Disney+.
Lightyear Pixar movie fan reactions: fans vs. critics
The beginning of social media response to the trailer and movie has begun on Twitter.
One fan commented on their love of Keke Palmer.
An indirect byproduct of watching Jump In (2007) on dvd until the dvd was scratched and didn’t work anymore is that I immediately recognized keke palmers voice in the Lightyear trailer

Cale is excited a Pixar movie finally hit theaters.
I work in an IMAX, I get free entry in specially reserved seats for employees. I wish the last three films had the chance, but I am glad that my first Pixar film in theatres in the last two years will be Lightyear.

Vern is entirely uninterested.
I have spent many months considering it and I have decided I still don’t find this LIGHTYEAR idea to be appealing. And I’m a guy who paid to see every Pixar movie in the theater until the pandemic. Even CARS 3 and THE GOOD DINOSAUR.
So I guess I’m free now

Meanwhile, Josh slammed critics like Vern.
People like to hate on Pixar films. Everytime a new film gets announced they claim it will be the downfall of the studio. They said this about The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up and Coco. I’m sure Lightyear will be a masterpiece. https://t.co/eUnyulmw90
