Miley Cyrus recreates iconic Wrecking Ball video during Midnight Sky VMAs performance

Miley Cyrus gave the ultimate throwback as she recreated scenes from her Wrecking Ball music video during her performance of new single Midnight Sky at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The singer hit the stage during Sunday’s (August 30, 2020) socially-distanced show to perform her latest break-up song – which she dropped days before confirming her split from Australian singer Cody Simpson.

During her performance, Miley sang about her exes, including Cody, Kaitlynn Carter, and ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, while repeating infamous imagery from the clip – including swinging atop a disco ball in the dark.

The visual was apt for the lyrics of the tune, which include lines such as, “Lotta years went by with my hands tied up in your ropes” and “See my lips on her mouth, everybody’s talkin’ now, baby”.

During a recent appearance on the Zach Sang Show, Miley explained how the song reminds her of the world’s current cultural landscape. She said: “This song is really just a reflection of everyone kind of having this personal kind of woke moment, I feel like a lot of us are waking up.

“I feel like right now in society, we don’t want to live with our heads in the clouds… So I think that it’s a cool message, to tell people to create the environment and the world that you wanna live in and I think that’s happening on a very political level right now.”

Miley was one of several performers at the VMAs, alongside Lady Gaga – the night’s big winner – who delivered a 10-minute medley from her latest album Chromatica and was joined by Ariana Grande for a version of the hit Rain on Me. Maluma, Doja Cat, The Weeknd, and BTS also performed.
