Leonardo DiCaprio applauded the Golden Globes on Thursday (January 2, 2020), after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced they’d chosen to serve a plant-based meal at the upcoming 2020 awards.

HFPA president Lorenzo Soria revealed the move in a statement, in which he said the move was made in a bid to make the awards more environmentally friendly.

Guests at the awards will reportedly enjoy an appetizer of chilled golden beetroot soup before tucking into an entree of king oyster mushroom scallops and wild mushroom risotto, with roasted baby purple and green Brussels sprouts and carrots.

Following the announcement of the news, Leonardo was quick to offer his support, sharing a link to an article on the statement, and writing: “Thank you HFPA @goldenglobes (hands clapping emoji).”

The HFPA also announced they’ve teamed up with Icelandic Glacial to serve naturally alkaline and sustainably-sourced natural spring water in glass bottles to reduce plastic waste.

“If there’s a way we can, not change the world, but save the planet, maybe we can get the Golden Globes to send a signal and draw attention to the issue about climate change,” explained Soria. “The food we eat, the way we grow the food we eat, the way we dispose of the food is one of the large contributors to the climate crisis.

“People were basically saying it’s too late, we’re ready with all the orders, the holidays and all that. But after we began discussions, meeting for one or two days, (the hotel) accepted the change completely.

They started to experiment with how to do plant-based meals that was not just their symbolic steps, but also something that guests will enjoy.”

The Golden Globes will take place on January 6th.
