LeBron James to put on ‘virtual graduation’ special for high school class of 2020

Basketball superstar Lebron James is to host a star-studded virtual graduation TV and streaming special for America’s high school students.

U.S. youngsters will not be able to attend graduation day celebrations this year (2020) due to the Covid-19 crisis, and LeBron has teamed up with stars including the Jonas Brothers, Pharrell Williams, and Lena Waithe to make sure they don’t miss out altogether.

The sporting legend and his foundation are partnering with philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs’ XQ Institute and the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) to host the virtual ceremony for U.S. high school seniors that will air on major TV networks and online.

Announcing the special in a statement, James says: “These students have worked incredibly hard for this and there’s no way we can let that go unrecognized. While this won’t be the graduation experience they were supposed to get, we hope we can still give them something special because they deserve it.”

Also participating are actors Yara Shahidi, and Ben Platt, soccer star Megan Rapinoe, musicians Bad Bunny YBN Cordae, Loren Gray, and H.E.R., as well as Nobel Peace Prize-winning activist Malala Yousafzai.

The one-hour special, Graduate Together: America Honors the High School Class of 2020, will air simultaneously across all broadcast networks – ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC from 8:00 pm ET on May 16th, as well as on the streaming platforms YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, PeopleTV and Complex Networks.
