BBC bosses launch poll for greatest guitar riffs

BBC bosses have launched an ambitious, day-long hunt for the greatest guitar riff of all time. A list of 100 classic, instantly-recognisable hooks has been compiled by record producers, critics, and staff at BBC Radio 2, and listeners of the station will hear the entire rundown throughout Monday (25Aug14).
Fans have also been voting for their favourites, and the ‘winner’ will be declared by presenter Zoe Ball at around 5pm London time.
The list features iconic riffs including T Rex’s 20th Century Boy, Money by Pink Floyd, Chuck Berry’s Johnny B Goode, Livin’ On A Prayer by Bon Jovi, and Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie.
Others on the rundown include Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love, Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana, Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple, and The Kinks’ You Really Got Me.
Radio 2 DJ Janice Long, who helped compile the list, says, “I was in agony trying to whittle down my nominations. It was a tough job but I am happy I got to do it.”
