The 67 year old plays a grandparent in new comedy Parental Guidance opposite Billy Crystal, but Midler didn’t find the job offer funny when she was first approached about the part.
She tells the New York Post, “I was totally offended. I didn’t think grandmother parts would come so soon.”
However, Midler relented and accepted the role when she discovered she would be playing a granny who is young at heart.
She adds, “I was up for playing a fun grandma… Grandparents are not quite the same as they used to be. People are fighting tooth and nail to stay fit.”
In the film, Midler and Crystal play grandparents who are drafted in as last-minute babysitters for their young relatives, and the When Harry Met Sally… star admits he drew on real life experience as he already has three grandchildren and one on the way.
Crystal, who also produced the film, says, “I have three and 2/3 of a grandkid. The last one is due in March. I created the movie from real experiences with my grandkids. I am a grandpa – you can’t try to hide this stuff. I embraced it. I earned it.”
