Movie writer and playwright David Mamet has attacked the Hollywood system,
revealing he loathes making movies.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning Glengarry Glen Ross writer has written
screenplays for over 20 movies in a career spanning more than two decades.
But the more he sees of the movie industry the more he loathes everyone
involved in film-making.
Mamet–whose next movie, Joan of Bark, stars Will Ferrell–tells Harpers &
Queen magazine, “In my experience, almost every financial interchange with
Hollywood ends with an accusation by the corporation of theft.
“The corporation is enraged that the raw materials it is their charter to
exploit have found voice and ‘answered back’. The audience, to them, is
composed of ignorant natives, who must be transformed, segment by segment, into
docile proprietary consumers.”
The 57-year-old has equal disdain for movie critics: “(They) derive
sustenance from opposing growth.
“At the beginning of a career, they will attack the new as worthless. Should
the artist thrive, they will attack the successful as failing…(They’re)
licensed both to laud the worthless and to disparage the work of their
betters.”
