‘Dunkirk’ Up for Cesar Award

Christopher Nolan’s Second World War epic Dunkirk has received a Cesar Awards nomination, France’s equivalent of the Oscars.

The movie, which is also up for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, received a nod for Best Foreign Film when the nominees were announced by bosses at France’s Academy of Cinema Arts and Techniques on Wednesday (31Jan18).

Nolan’s film, which stars Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, Fionn Whitehead and One Direction singer Harry Styles, depicts the British army’s escape from the Northern French port of Dunkirk after being trapped by Nazi forces.

Dunkirk will compete against La La Land, the musical which famously missed out on the Best Picture prize at last year’s Oscars, The Square, Loveless, Le Caire Confidentiel, L’Echange Des Princesses and Noces.

Academy president Alain Terzian and French comedian Manu Payet announced those up for awards at a press conference at Fouquet’s restaurant in Paris on Wednesday.

Other notable nominees include Charlotte Gainsbourg, who received a Best Actress nod for her role in another World War Two drama Promise at Dawn, and Juliette Binoche, who is up for the same award after starring in philosophical romance Let the Sun Shine In.

Michel Hazanavicius is among the Best Director nominees for his comedy Redoubtable, while AIDS activism drama 120 Beats per Minute, and First World War film See You Up There have the most nods with 13 each.

Spanish actress Penelope Cruz will receive an honorary award at the Cesars ceremony, which takes place in Paris on 2 March.
