Fans left with burns after firewalk at Tony Robbins event

World-famous motivational speaker and author Tony Robbins has spoken out after 21 people were hurt during a hot coal firewalk at an event last week (19Jul12).

Fans are often invited to walk over the coals in their bare feet as a metaphor for overcoming difficulties at Robbins’ Unleash the Power Within seminars – but one such challenge in San Jose, California didn’t go as well as planned.

Firefighters treated 21 people for second and third-degree burns after they attempted to walk across the 1,000-degree coal pit.

A statement from Robbins reads: “We have been safely providing this experience for more than three decades. We continue to work with local fire and emergency personnel to ensure this event is always done in the safest way possible.”

Local fire department officials have confirmed emergency medical personnel were on hand at the event and that Robbins’ organisation had received a permit.

Oprah Winfrey walked across the coals at an Unleash the Power Within event earlier this year (12) as part of an Oprah’s Next Chapter TV special about Robbins.
