Jazz musician Lionel Ferbos dies

Jazz trumpeter Lionel Ferbos has died, just days after his 103rd birthday. Ferbos, who was considered the oldest working jazz musician in New Orleans, Louisiana, died peacefully at his home in the city on Saturday (19Jul14), surrounded by friends and family. He celebrated his 103rd birthday on Thursday (17Jul14).
He began taking cornet lessons aged 15 and played with jazz bands in and around his hometown. He toured Europe eight times with the New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra and he also led the French Quarter’s Palm Court Jazz Band for more than 20 years.
Ferbos remained an active musician even after he passed the 100-year landmark. He performed at his 102nd birthday and at every New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival until last year (13). He last played in public in March (14).
