Belinda Carlisle baffled by lack of all-girl bands

Pop star Belinda Carlisle is baffled by the lack of self-formed all-girl bands despite improving gender equality in the modern music industry. The Circle in the Sand singer started her career in the 1970s as part of successful all-girl punk group The Go-Go’s, who were famed for playing their own instruments and writing their own songs.
While the band was hugely popular at the time, Carlisle remembers the challenges they faced in a male dominated music industry as many record executives were reluctant to take a chance on them.
She tells U.K. TV show BBC Breakfast, “Even when we were packing clubs around the States and you couldn’t get a Go-Go’s ticket, the record companies would come and say we can’t sign you because you’re all women.
“It has changed a lot (since then), I mean since the Go-Go’s there’s been a few bands, (but) it’s weird to me that there aren’t that many all-girl bands, rather than vocal groups, that actually put themselves together rather than some Svengali putting them together… it’s always surprising to me.”
