While in Tokyo for the premiere of “Sex and the City 2,” Sarah Jessica Parker told UsMagazine.com she “[hopes] Carrie will live on…even if the movies don’t.” So does that mean she’d consider making a third movie based on the series, even if the most recent flick was disastrous and offensive to almost everyone? Well…yes. Probably. That’s probably exactly what she means.
Here’s the thing. Sarah Jessica Parker will never play another character as brilliant as Carrie on “Sex and the City,” so she’s going to take every opportunity to optimize the franchise, on behalf of something like “satiating the fans.” That, in combination with her being quite the businesswoman (she’s got her own fragrance and dabbles with various clothing lines), she definitely refuses to let the “Sex and the City” name die on a note as sour as the second feature film.
But again, I have to point out when it was announced the series would end after the sixth season, SJP said it was important to leave when the show was in its prime, because “you don’t want to be the last one to leave a party.” But am I crazy, or does that seem exactly what’s happening? Suddenly it seems the series we begged not to end has turned into a greedy and opportunistic mutant that’s so disappointing, we wish it would just collapse in on itself. It’s sad to think of the girls spending the entirety of a third movie cracking even more age jokes and squeezing into the same outfits they’ve been wearing since 1998. But the biggest tragedy of all would be if Sarah Jessica Parker thinks we’re willing to give her a little more time to watch her shimmy herself into her dresses and Manolos.
